Foundation Commits $500,000 for Four-arm da Vinci

Rose Aldag-McVey
Good Samaritan Regional Health Center Foundation has committed $500,000 to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital-Mt. Vernon for their second da Vinci Surgical System.  The new four-arm da Vinci robotic system represents the latest in surgical and robotics technologies and expands upon the current robotics program at Good Samaritan Hospital which began five years ago.

“The addition of the four-arm da Vinci robot is another way SSM Health can provide the residents of Southern Illinois with state of the art quality health care,” remarks SSM Health Regional CEO Phil Gustafson. “We are grateful the Foundation continues to assist us as we grow our services and expand our service area in Southern Illinois.”

SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital uses computerized robots that are entirely controlled by the surgeon, allowing them to perform more complex operations than could be easily accomplished using traditional techniques. The four-arm da Vinci system allows surgeons to do even more complicated surgeries robotically such as nephrectomy, prostatectomy and additional colon resections.  The 4th arm brings in additional instruments which the surgeon uses to manipulate other organs or structures, moving them aside and allows the surgeon to access the desired work location.  The benefits to the patient can include, but are not limited to, reduced pain, less blood loss, reduced risk of infection and quicker recovery.

“With this contribution, the Foundation has committed over a million dollars this past year to help us provide exceptional care to our patients,” comments Mike Warren, President of SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital.  “The four-arm da Vinci robot is a wonderful addition to our hospital and will allow our skilled surgeons to perform procedures locally that previously had to be referred to other facilities.”  There are many surgeries that are performed at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital using the da Vinci Surgical Systems including: hysterectomy, gallbladder removal, prostatectomy, nephrectomy, and colon resections. Norma Fairchild, Foundation Board Chairperson, states, “Without the contributions from our supporters, the Foundation would not have been able to make this commitment to assist Good Samaritan Hospital. We are most grateful to all of our friends who have generously supported the Foundation."
