See what breast cancer can look and feel like.
Have you seen this lemon poster? What a clever way to show some of the physical developments which are indications of potential breast issues; which is important for both women and men.
"3D mammography is one of the best ways to catch breast cancer early," states Merrilee Brandt, MD, general surgeon with SSM Health Medical Group. According to a recent Yale study, 3D mammography has been shown to reduce the number of biopsies. "The clarity on these mammograms means women undergo less procedures and that also means less anxiety too," states Brandt.
"Get a 3D mammogram!" says Brandt, this technology shows lesions more clearly which means:
1) the radiologist is more likely to pick up on REAL concerns, and
2) physicians are more likely to know what you don't have to worry about.
"You have to do it, so be sure you get a 3D one", states Brandt when speaking about mammograms. She also reports radiologists are picking up on smaller lesions too, those which were not visible before when using 3D technology. Early diagnosis increases survival rates. Brandt jokingly states, "Don't hesitate, have your lemons squeezed annually; it will be over in a few minutes," as she describes having a 3D mammogram. She also warns against going to a facility which does NOT utilize this technology as there is a significant difference in breast cancer detection with 3D mammograms.
Imaging at both SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Centralia and SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital - Mt. Vernon have 3D mammography equipment and well trained mammography staff. The radiologist leading the department is Mayo Clinic trained; also, they have mammography technicians with extremely high patient satisfaction scores. Meaning we have one great big wonderful breast program.
