SSM Health Weight Management Services at St. Mary’s Hospital - Centralia offers two different bariatric surgery options. Here are a few details:
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a procedure where the surgeon sections off a portion of the stomach and reroutes part of the small intestine. This combination of cutting off part of the stomach and moving the small intestine restricts the amount of food that is consumed and limits the calories absorbed by the body.
This procedure taks 60-90 minutes to complete and generally results in the loss of 50-60 percent of excess wieght in the first two years.
The sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive form of weight-loss surgery where approximately 75 percent of the stomach is removed. Because the new stomach continues to function normally, there are fewer restrictions to the type of food patients can eat after surgery, but the amount of food one can digest is greatly decreased, helping with weight loss.
Generally, patients lose about 60 percent of their excess weight. This procedure is often part of a two-stage process that leads to a gastric bypass.
