Lymphedema develops when lymph vessels or lymph nodes are missing, impaired, damaged or removed. This can cause an abnormal buildup of fluid that causes swelling, particularly common in the arms and legs.

Most of these procedures require removal of lymph nodes, which in turn causes a change in the flow of lymph fluid to a particular part of the body. The remaining lymph vessels may be unable to drain enough fluid, causing excess fluid to build up which may lead to swelling or lymphedema.
Lymphedema cannot be cured, but early and careful management can help reduce symptoms and prevent progression of the condition.

Lymph drainage massage
Therapy usually consists of daily care for 1-2 weeks with the ultimate goal of the patient/family becoming independent in massage, exercise and/or dressing as needed, and conversion to an appropriate compression garment at the completion of care.
Although most insurances cover this service, prior to initiating care the costs and commitments are discussed with the patient, so that the patient is confident and committed from the beginning of the program.
