Endocrinology & Diabetes

SSM health has physicians, endocrinologists, who specialize in treating diseases of the endocrine system, including diabetes, glands and hormones and can help one get started on a path to health and wellness.

Because hormones control our metabolism, growth and fertility, endocrinologists work with a broad array of diseases. Some of the conditions most commonly treated by endocrinologists include:

Diabetes Self-Management

SSM Health offers one of the most comprehensive diabetes programs in southern Illinois with both SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital - Mt. Vernon and SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Centralia achieving the prestigious American Diabetes Association Recognition status. 

Diabetes Self-Management Education is a proven way to lower the Hgb A1C, which reduces the complications and costs of diabetes while improving quality of life.

To participate, contact your physician and request an order for both diabetes education and nutrition education. Our services are provided by a highly trained staff of professionals and is under the guidance of an Advisory Board.

Our diabetes services & support include:

  • Type 1

Diabetes self-management courses teach you about:

  • ​Monitoring
  • Medications
  • Physical activity
  • Healthy eating
  • Preventing complications
  • Psychological adjustment
  • Problem-solving 
  • Goal-planning
  • Insulin teaching 

Types of Self-Management Sessions:


Group sessions (preferred by Medicare)​

Group sessions are conducted over three days for a total of nine hours. Participants learn about managing diabetes from A – Z while meeting people who have the same diabetes questions.

Individual sessions

Individual sessions last approximately one hour and take two to three sessions to complete.   These visits are intended for those who are unable or unwilling to participate in group sessions.  

Is Diabetes Self-Management covered by Insurance or Medicare?

​All of the above services are covered by Medicare and most private payers.  Medicaid does not cover any education.  However, Medicaid and self-pay patients may be eligible for financial assistance.  Contact Patient Business Services for more information.

Diabetes Support Group 

Free Diabetes Support Groups are held monthly at both hospitals.  There is no charge for attendance and advance registration is not required.
